Oudong District, Kampong Speu Province, Cambodia (Sep. 6, 2010) — Mr. Justin Yifu Lin, Chief Economist and Senior Vice President at the World Bank, visited Golden Rice (Cambodia) factory today with the World Bank Cambodia’s team, including Mr. Qimiao Fan, Country Manager and Stéphane Guimbert, Senior Country Economist. The visiting delegation also included H.E. Mr. Hang Chuon Naron, Secretary of State, Ministry of Economy and Finance.
On an official three-day visit in Cambodia, from Sep. 6 to Sep. 8, Mr. Lin spent his first afternoon at Golden Rice (Cambodia) factory, where he was greeted by Golden Rice (Cambodia) president, Mr. Sok Hach. The visiting delegation watched a short film about the company and rice processing, before engaging in a discussion about Cambodia’s rice industry. Mr. Sok explained the process of selecting and purchasing paddy, as well as the key strengths of Golden Rice (Cambodia) in producing high-quality rice.
Mr. Lin learnt about the factory’s quality control through a demonstration in Golden Rice (Cambodia) laboratory and could witness first-hand the process of rice milling at the production plant.
Mr. Sok also led the visiting delegation to the husk-power generator plant, where he explained how rice husks—usually considered a waste—were used to power boilers and produce steam, generating electricity for the compound.
At the end of the visit, Mr. Sok presented Mr. Lin with a gift, a delicately engraved silver plate representing Golden Rice (Cambodia) factory.
